The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is a public institution that now has more than 14,000 students. The university seeks to stimulate intellectual curiosity, imagination, rational thinking, and thoughtful expression in a broad range of disciplines and professional fields. UNCW is split into four academic colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Health and Human Services, the Cameron School of Business, and the Watson School of Education. There is also the Graduate School, which offers master’s and doctorate degree in a wide variety of studies. You can find everything you need about the academics offered at UNCW here.
Life as a UNCW student begins with a two-day freshman orientation (one day for transfers), during which you’ll meet many of your fellow classmates and learn everything you need to know about getting started on campus. You will also register for classes and take any placement tests that you may need.
There are 45 residence halls that service the UNCW campus, including traditional dorms, suites, and apartments. Nearly 40 percent of students live on campus, and students who opt to move off campus can access most of the community’s services through the Seahawk Perch, UNCW’s network for off-campus residents.
If you’re still on the fence about attending UNCW; we suggest a guided tour of the campus so that you can really get a feel for what life on campus and as a Seahawk is like. If you want to register for a campus tour, login to your SeaLevel account and click on “Visit UNCW” on the navigation area on the left of your home page. Then choose “Schedule a Tour” from the drop-down menu. Finally, select the date you wish to visit and fill out the required information. They will send you a confirmation e-mail confirming your visit. The tours are usually between 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours long and cover everything from dining to academics to on-campus housing.
Around 2000, the Student Rec. Center was opened to students, staff, and faculty members. It has three basketball courts, lots of exercise machines, a weight training area, running track, and a climbing wall. There is also a group exercise room which supports multiple clubs and activities, including Yoga, Pilates, and an Aikido club. In 2012, the Student Recreation Center added a new indoor swimming pool.
Local Wilmington retirees can also enjoy social and learning experiences at the University Campus where the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute provides quality classes and activities focused on adults aged 50 and older.
